Dharan post #1

Hello all. We have made it to Dharan, Nepal. The flight was great and quite scenic. We caught a glimpse of the Himalayas through the haze. Our host sent a 2nd year surgery resident to meet us at the airport in Biratnagar. We then climbed into two hospital ambulances and headed off to the BP Koirala Medical Center in Dharan.

Yesterday evening, we met a number of patients and selected some for surgery on Sunday and Monday. We operated this morning on several cases: re-staging TURBT for bladder cancer, EUA for advanced bladder cancer, posterior urethral valves, and open pyelolithotomy for a large kidney stone. Everyone on the team is doing well and we are trying to settle in.

  1. Hey Rich! What a great idea for the blog. Did the runway situation improve? My dad has been over there many times as you know, and even he is surprised at what they will call a "runway"! I am so jealous hearing about all of the surgeries. I so wanted to go on this trip! Oh well, there will be lots of other opportunities in the future. Tell everyone (especially Norma) I say high and I will be keeping tabs on you all.

  2. Hi Tate! I wish you were here too. It's really been a great experience so far. Being exposed to such poverty makes me appreciate how very fortunate we are in the US. I'll let the team know. They have been reading the blog and adding to it too. Rrrr.

  3. Yo Rich, looks like a great trip. Ed and I rolled some Flann's last friday for fish sandwiches and beverages. It just wasn't the same without our whole crew present.

  5. Thanks Glenn, Ed, and Jill. I miss hanging with you guys too. But, on the plus side, I'm going to try to pick up some duty-free Irish whiskey and choice cigars on the way back home and we'll have toast upon our safe return. I can't wait!
